Students & ECRs

The student and early career researcher (SECR) representatives from across the participating societies have gotten together to bring you three initiatives to help you all connect, have a fun time, meet new people and make the conference an inclusive event.

Conference buddies

Conference buddies are students and ECRs attending the conference who have volunteered to be a friendly face and point of contact for other SECRs. They will be wearing a green name tag like in the image below. If you don’t know many people at the conference, are feeling a bit out of place or have any questions please come and say hi to one of us. There will be about a dozen conference buddies and all of them are friendly folks keen to meet new people and make sure everyone feels comfortable at this event. The conference buddies are also the people you should talk to if you hit Bingo.

P.s. If you would like to volunteer to be a conference buddy let Helen know, we still have a few spare name tags.

SECR Bingo

Below is a bingo card designed by Brock Hedges specially for SECRs at the conference. Please just print one, they have the same content, the order is shuffled so we don’t all hit bingo at once. Alternatively, pick up a bingo sheet at the registration desk. You can pick up a printed copy at the registration desk or use it on your devices to play.

How to play

There are four prizes up for grabs. To win complete all items in one line (row, column or diagonal). Tell one of the “conference buddies” when you have BINGO!

You can tick off several items from one presentation, but you need to speak to a different person for each of the ‘talk to someone’ items.

Bingo begins at the start of the conference on the 26th of November, so you can be playing during your workshops and at the welcome mixer.

The four prizes are pictured here, first to hit bingo gets to choose first and so on.

SECR only social mixer

Thank you to everyone who expressed an interest in attending the SECR social mixer, we’ve had more than 50 people say they would like to attend. The event will be held from 6.30 pm on Monday the 27th of November at Badger & Co. This bar is on the ANU campus directly opposite Kambri so should be easy to get to, but ask a conference buddy if you aren’t sure. We have a selection of platters ordered for the event which cover the range of dietary requirements we received. On your way in grab a token valid for one drink (anything from the bar). The platters we have ordered look quite substantial but Badger & Co also have a full menu available if anyone would like to order dinner or extra drinks at your own expense. The social mixer is likely to be a good time to tick off some of the social bingo categories so make sure you bring your bingo card.

As always please get in touch with any questions (Helen.Kennedy@csiro.au)

See you next week!

From your SECR representatives,

Helen Kennedy, Grace Boxshall, Brock Hedges, Luke Vaughan, Patrick Fahey, Andrew McDougall, Paulo Baleeiro Souza
